While working for Indy Hall as Director of Operations, I was approached by Science Leadership Academy to teach a “minicourse”. Every year SLA invites professionals from a broad range of industries to teach a 10 class series on their organizations and careers.
I designed and led this program as an alternative to structured networking for the Freelance Fest 2020, a community-building event for freelancers, consultants, and clients around Philadelphia. The goal was to get people talking to each other by providing just enough structure to grease the proverbial wheels. We were also able to use the activity to capture a ton of invaluable data about our attendees.
In 2017 I designed and taught the curriculum for a 6 week apprenticeship on an urban farm in North East Philly. This is the rough outline from the 6 week program, including an introduction to Food Justice, learning about the history of growing food in our country, analyzing our organizations impact, grading our organizations alignment with other local businesses, and much more.
Since becoming a tummler for Indy Hall I’ve been pondering endlessly “How did I get here?”
I’ve come to realize that a decision I made as an 18 year old was the first step on a path which ultimately led me right here, looking back and admiring my journey.
In the spring of 2018 I was applying to any and all jobs I could find. After several trying years of work experience in two wildly different fields and approximately zero college experience, me, my high school diploma, and my funny looking resume did our damndest to find something.
Anaia will be talking about how it is to be an ally and be part of the resisting movement against racism. And how being an ally is not just calling out people about their racism or homophobia but also having to teach and learn how to be a more understanding and accepting community.
